【原文】

子曰：〝可與共學，未可與適道；可與適道，未可與立；可與立，未可與權。〞

【參考譯文】

孔子說：〝在一起學習的人，不一定能取得同樣的成績；同樣取得成績的人，不一定都能立身處世；在一起立身處世的人，不一定都能通權達變。〞

【English Translation】

Confucius said: "Those who study together would not necessarily follow the way.

Those who do follow the way will not necessarily be able to become established in it.

Those who become established do not necessarily have equal judgment. "

        Note: Confucius is saying that to progress in studies, one must be able to make flexible applications, creatively express oneself, or be doomed to failure.

【原文】

〝唐棣之華，偏其反而，豈不爾思？空是遠而。〞子曰：〝未之思也。夫何遠之有？〞

【參考譯文】

古代有一首詩說：〝康棣樹開花，搖擺翩翩。我不是不思念你，是因為路途遙遠。〞孔子說：〝這不是想念，如果真的想念，怎麼會覺得遙遠？〞

【English Translation】

A poem of old reads: "The aspen plum blossoms! Bent towards me it waves! It’s not that I do not think of you. But that your home is too far away. "

Confucius said: "The writer of this poem does not really miss his beloved. If he did, how could he feel that his beloved is too far away? "

Note: For Confucius, the subject of the poem is possibly benevolence.

【原文】

孔子於鄉黨，恂恂如也，似不能言者。其在宗廟朝廷，便便言，唯謹爾。

【參考譯文】

孔子在家鄉很溫和恭順，好象是個不善言辭的人。他在宗廟裡、朝堂上卻很健談，只是很謹慎。

【English Translation】

When Confucius was in his hometown, he was sincere,and behaved like he was not a good speaker but when he was at the ancestral temple or the court, he spoke brilliantly but cautiously.
