子曰：〝狂而不直，侗而不願，悾悾而不信，吾不知之矣。〞

【參考譯文】

孔子說：〝狂妄而不正直，無知而不謹慎，無能而不講信用，我不知道這種人為什麼會這樣。〞

【English Translation】

Confucius said: "Those who are arrogant and not upright, those who are ignorant but not careful, those who are incompetent and yet not trustworthy, are quite beyond my understanding."

【原文】

子曰：〝禹，吾無間然矣！菲飲食而致孝乎鬼神，惡衣服而致美乎黻冕，卑宮室而盡力乎溝洫。禹，吾無間然矣。〞

【參考譯文】

孔子說：〝對於禹，我挑不出他的什麼毛病了。他自己飲食很差，卻把祭品辦得很豐盛；平時衣著很差，卻把祭服做得很華麗；居室也很差，卻把力量完全用於興修水利上，禹是無可挑剔的。〞

【English Translation】

      Confucius said: "Concerning Yu, I cannot find any shortcomings. He lived on a poor diet, but performed lavish rituals. His clothes were poorly made, but his ceremonial gown was magnificent. His house and rooms were spartan. The energy he saved was used to build dykes. I can find no fault with him at all."

子罕言、利、與命、與仁。

【參考譯文】

孔子平時很少談到功利，命運和仁德。

【English Translation】

Confucius seldom talked about material gains, destiny and benevolence at the same time.

        Note: Although Confucius advocated benevolence as a foundational virtue of gentlemen and gave examples of it, he seldom explicitly defined benevolence.
