子夏為莒父宰，問政。子曰：〝無欲速，無見小利，欲速則不達，見小利則大事不成。〞

【參考譯文】

子夏擔任了莒父縣長，向孔子詢問政務，孔子說：〝做事不要圖快，不要貪圖小利。圖快反而達不到目的，貪圖小利不能成就大事。〞

【English Translation】

When Zi Xia became county magistrate of Jufu county, he asked Confucius about government.

Confucius said: "Do not be hasty and do not covet small gains. Being too much in a hurry may result in one not reaching the goal, and coveting small gains will result in one not achieving anything big. "

【原文】

樊遲問仁，子曰：〝居處恭，執事敬，與人忠。雖之夷狄，不可棄也。〞

【參考譯文】

樊遲詢問仁是什麼，孔子說：〝侍奉父母態度恭敬，辦事情嚴肅認真，對朋友忠誠老實。即使到了邊地蠻族那兒，也不能背棄這三種品德。〞

【English Translation】

Fan chi asked about benevolence. Confucius said: " Respect one’s parents. Be conscientious in official responsibilities. Be loyal and honest to friends. These three moral principles will never be rejected anywhere. "

【原文】

子曰：〝不得中行而與之，必也狂狷乎﹗狂者進取，狷者有所不為也。〞

【參考譯文】

孔子說：〝如果沒有循規蹈矩的人做朋友，寧願和行為急進性格耿直的人交往。行為急進的人勇於進取，性格耿直的人不肯做壞事。〞

【English Translation】

Confucius said: "If one is unable to make friends with those who uphold conventions, one had better associate with those who are progressive and straightforward. Those who keep forging ahead and those who are straightforward are never willing to do any evil deeds. "
